Two and a half years ago, we, the \u00d6sterlind family, moved to Liberia. Our son Miles, who would have started third grade in Sweden at the time, had to put his English skills to the test and begin attending American school. Swedish is always spoken at home, but it did not take long before certain words were replaced, spelling became somewhat weaker, and interest in reading books in Swedish waned. That is why, after two years in American school, Miles began studying Swedish and geography at SMUL Academy. <\/p>\n
Getting an 11-year-old interested in doing homework beyond the piles he brings home from his regular school is a challenge. Finding an approach that suits him specifically is important. Initially, we set aside one day per week when Miles and one of us parents sat together. However, that did not work entirely for him, and we had to change how we approached the study material. Now he reads approximately 20 minutes every day instead, ranging from nonfiction books to Bert’s Diary. Assignments and videos are completed more sporadically. He either combines two lessons for a particular weekend or sits down a couple of evenings per week with an assignment. <\/p>\n
Miles’s knowledge of Swedish geography has already impressed his mother Jenny, who perhaps did not quite keep up with geography lessons 30 years ago. One positive aspect has been the variety of texts, information, and assignments. It has not become boring and repetitive; rather, most lessons have left an impression and have been discussed at the dinner table. <\/p>\n
Next year it will be little brother Benjamin’s turn. It will be a greater challenge since he has learned both reading and writing in American school, but I am confident that he will manage it with flying colors, just like his big brother. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
