Beginner Swedish 7-18 years

Beginner Swedish for elementary, middle, and high school is designed for children with a Swedish connection but without prior knowledge of the Swedish language. These courses are aimed at children and teenagers who have a Swedish-speaking parent capable of supporting them in their studies. The term beginner implies that the student cannot understand or speak Swedish at all and has no previous history of Swedish language studies.

Beginner Swedish Course – Elementary School, ages 7-9

Beginner courses Level 1 and 2 in Swedish for children aged 7-9 are two courses for children who can read and write in their school language(s) and who have a Swedish or Finland-Swedish connection through a parent or another close family member. The course requires no prior knowledge, but the child must be able to speak and understand English, French, or Spanish.

We offer two course levels. The difference between NYB LÅG Level 1 and Level 2 is that Level 2 assumes students have studied Swedish with us for one academic year or equivalent.

  • NYB LÅG Level 1 is a Swedish course for beginners and is recommended for children aged 7-9 who have not studied Swedish before but can read and write in their school language.
  • NYB LÅG Level 2 is a follow-up course in Swedish for beginners and is recommended for children aged 7-9 who have studied Swedish for one academic year with us or equivalent.
  • Please note that the material is monolingual and is based on a certain level of cultural prior knowledge about Sweden. We focus on building vocabulary, speaking, and writing in Swedish. Teachers guide the students through the materials and assignments.
  • The language of instruction is English, but it is also possible to take the course with French or Spanish as the language of instruction.
  • We recommend that students proceed to the NYB MELL 1 course after completing both NYB LÅG courses.
Beginner Swedish Course – Middle School, ages 10-13

Beginner Swedish Course – Middle School (ages 10-13) is a course for students who can read and write in their school language but have never previously received Swedish language instruction. The courses require no prior knowledge of Swedish, but as the language of instruction is English, students need to be proficient in English—alternatively French or Spanish. We offer three course levels.

    • NYB MELL Level 1 is a Swedish course for beginners, for students aged 10-12, corresponding to middle school grades 4-6 in Sweden.
    • NYB MELL Level 2 is a follow-up course in Swedish for beginners and is recommended for students aged 10-12 who have studied Swedish for one academic year with us or equivalent.
    • NYB MELL Level 3 is a follow-up course in Swedish for beginners and is recommended for students aged 10-13 who have studied Swedish for two academic years with us or equivalent.
    • Please note that the course is based on Swedish-language teaching materials aimed at students learning Swedish in Sweden, and that teachers guide the students through the material.
    • The language of instruction is English, but it is also possible to take the course with French or Spanish as the language of instruction.
    • We recommend that students who have completed Level 1 and Level 2 proceed to the NYB HÖG Level 1 course.
    • We recommend that students who have completed Level 3 proceed to the NYB HÖG Level 2 or NYB Level 4 course.
