Foundation Course D – Complementary Swedish for Lower/Middle Primary, Ages 9-10

Foundation Course D in complementary Swedish is intended for children aged 9–10 who can already read and write in their school language and have also practiced reading and writing in Swedish a little. It is a direct continuation of Foundation Course C.
The course follows the Swedish National Agency for Education’s curriculum for complementary Swedish and is designed by a certified teacher.

The course can be completed in three ways:

distance learning with a parent as supervisor
remote instruction in a group with a teacher (online)
private tutoring in a small group (1–3 students)

The instruction focuses on reading, simpler writing, language comprehension, and conversation. A reading assignment of approximately 60 minutes per week is included.

Academic objectives

The course is designed to provide students with practice in the following aspects of Swedish language and culture, according to the Swedish National Agency for Education’s curriculum for supplementary Swedish:

During the course, students practise, among other things:

the Swedish alphabet and the connection between sound and letter
the structure of the Swedish language, including uppercase and lowercase letters, periods, question marks, and exclamation points, as well as spelling rules for common Swedish words in student-friendly texts
reading strategies for understanding and interpreting texts in Swedish, and for adapting reading to the text’s form and content
Strategies for writing different types of texts in Swedish, adapting to their typical structure and linguistic features. Creating texts where the Swedish language interacts with images.
listening and retelling in Swedish in various conversational situations
oral storytelling in Swedish for different audiences and for various purposes, for example, to entertain or to teach.
Swedish words and concepts used to express feelings, knowledge, and opinions
how words and utterances are perceived by others depending on tone of voice and nuances of words.
differences between spoken and written Swedish, for example, that speech can be emphasized through voice pitch and body language.
traditions and holidays that students encounter in various contexts

The instruction follows the recommended teaching hours specified by the Swedish National Agency for Education for state grants: 2 × 37 hours.
To receive a diploma, students must complete the course’s study components according to the checklist. For distance learning, this means, for example, attendance at a minimum of 25 lessons, as well as completed reading assignments and submitted homework.

Course Structure

The course follows a study plan with 30 lessons. The lessons are described in assignment schedules where all study components are listed with page and file references.

The instruction is planned by Mimmi Pinto, a certified teacher in Swedish for preschool class through grade 3. Throughout the academic year, Swedish traditions are woven into the instruction, such as Lucia, Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, and end-of-school celebrations.

All courses are designed according to SMUL-akademin’s pedagogical concept.

The course uses printed teaching materials that are sent to the student’s address.

The instruction is based on the following teaching materials:

Jag läser D, Den försvunna elefanten – The final part of the series! Follow the group on Alvägen as they search for the elephant Indra, who suddenly disappears without a trace from their zoo.
ZickZack 3, Läsrummet, textsamling – in this text collection, students encounter different types of texts. The texts are organized around themes – Circus, The Iron Age, Moving (Emigration), Flies, Books, and Encounters.
ZickZack 3, Läsrummet, övningsbok – exercises to complete before and after reading. The exercises provide prior knowledge, develop students’ reading comprehension as well as their language and vocabulary understanding. Different reading comprehension strategies are practiced continuously. The goals for each theme are clear, and the exercise book concludes with a checklist for self-assessment.
Students will have the opportunity to develop their listening comprehension with the help of radio programs Monstret Frank: Monstret på cirkusen and Monstret Frank: Monstret i natten from UR Play.

In addition to this, assignments based on the content of Den försvunna elefanten – created by SMUL Academy – as well as exercises on the digital platform Bingel, which are linked to ZickZack, are also used.
