#All basic courses in supplementary Swedish for ages 6-20

Basic Course F – Supplementary Swedish for Middle School, ages 11-12

Basic Course F is based on supplementary Swedish and Swedish geography, where we focus primarily on Swedish geography, learning about provinces, concepts, and what symbolizes Swedish geography. It is a direct continuation of Basic Course E and is aimed at children aged 11–12 who have often had previous Swedish instruction. The course follows the Swedish National Agency for Education’s syllabus for supplementary Swedish and is designed by a certified teacher.

The course can be completed in three ways:

  • distance learning with a parent as a tutor
  • Teacher-led group distance learning (online)
  • private instruction in a small group (1–3 students)

Instruction focuses on reading, basic writing, language comprehension, and conversation. A reading assignment of approximately 60 minutes per week is included.

Academic objectives

The course was created to provide students with training in the following aspects according to the Swedish National Agency for Education's syllabus for supplementary Swedish and geography:

  • reading strategies to understand and interpret Swedish texts from various media, as well as to distinguish the messages of texts, both explicit and those found between the lines.
  • strategies for writing different types of texts in Swedish, adapted to their typical structure and linguistic features. Creation of texts where the Swedish language interacts with images and sound.
  • the structure of the Swedish language, including sentence construction, main clauses, subordinate clauses, spelling rules, punctuation, word inflections, and parts of speech. Text structure using transitional words.
  • Arguing in Swedish in various conversational situations and decision-making processes.
  • Oral presentations in Swedish for different audiences.
  • Selected literary significant Swedish children's and young adult authors and their works.
  • Cultural, social, and geographical issues related to Sweden, such as customs, practices, and traditions, or schooling in Sweden in comparison with similar phenomena in other countries.
  • Swedish natural and cultural landscapes. The processes behind them, as well as their characteristic features and distribution.
  • Names and locations of Sweden's provinces, as well as towns, mountains, seas, and waters in Sweden, along with the main features of the rest of the Nordic region.

Instruction follows the recommended teaching time specified by the Swedish National Agency for Education for state grants: 2 × 37 hours.

To receive a diploma, students must complete the course's study components according to the checklist. For remote learning, this includes, for example, attendance at a minimum of 25 lessons as well as completed reading assignments and submissions.

Course Structure

The course follows a study plan with 30 lessons. The lessons are described in assignment schedules where all study components are listed with page and file references.

The instruction is planned by Annika Lindh Cully, who is a certified teacher. During the school year, Swedish traditions are woven into the teaching, such as Lucia, Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, and the end-of-term ceremony.

All courses are designed according to the SMUL Academy's pedagogical concept.

Learning Resources

The course uses digital teaching materials shared via digital licenses to the students' email, as well as a printed workbook sent to the student's home. The study material in Basic Course F includes:

  • Liber Svenska 5 digital is an enjoyable and engaging teaching material based on literature, where students are given the opportunity to develop their abilities regardless of whether they study Swedish as a first or second language. The foundation of the material consists of three large literature-based themes: Side by Side – Identity – Fantasy, where excerpts from famous children's and young adult books meet other text types such as articles, factual texts, poems, and interviews.
  • Liber Svenska Workbook (printed) is a printed workbook with exercises for the three literature-based thematic chapters in Liber Svenska 5 digital. The book is a supplement to Liber Svenska 5 and contains reading comprehension questions, oral activities, and concluding assignments.
  • Geography 4–6, digital student license, focuses on Swedish geography. Students practice vocabulary and concepts through recurring, self-correcting exercises. Additionally, there are Geo-activities that train various abilities. Geography 4–6 also helps students understand how humans constantly affect nature (i.e., sustainable development).
  • Exercises linked to Geografens testamente “Sverigeresan”, a program for middle school children. Students watch the program and then answer or discuss questions about the content.
  • Sveriges landskap, published by Tengnäs Läromedel, provides in-depth studies of different provinces. The material is available as a PDF in Google Drive.
