Foundation Course H – Complementary Swedish for Secondary School, Ages 13–14

Foundation Course H is a course in complementary Swedish with a focus on Swedish (Nordic) fiction and poetry throughout history.

The course is a direct continuation of Foundation Course G and is intended for students aged 13–14, corresponding to secondary school years 7–8 in Sweden. Students have often already studied complementary Swedish and are accustomed to working independently at the computer.

The course follows the Swedish National Agency for Education’s curriculum for complementary Swedish and is designed by a certified teacher.

The course can be completed in three ways:

  • distance studies with a parent as supervisor
  • distance learning in a group with a teacher (online)
  • private instruction in a small group (1–3 students)

The instruction focuses on reading, writing, language comprehension, and conversation. A reading assignment of approximately 60 minutes per week is included.

Academic objectives

The course is designed to provide students with practice in the following aspects of Swedish and Swedish culture, according to the Swedish National Agency for Education's curriculum for complementary Swedish, for students aged 13–14:

  • The structure of the Swedish language, including spelling rules, punctuation, word classes, and sentence elements
  • Swedish fiction for young adults and adults from different periods. Fiction that illuminates human conditions and questions of identity and life. Poetry, drama, fairy tales, and myths.
  • Some literarily significant young adult and adult fiction authors from Sweden and their works, as well as the historical and cultural contexts in which the works were created.
  • Swedish words and concepts used to express feelings, knowledge, and opinions. The nuances and connotations of Swedish words and concepts. Figurative language and Swedish idiomatic expressions.
  • New words in the Swedish language, such as loanwords.
  • Differences in language use depending on the context, with whom, and for what purpose one communicates.
  • The importance of language for exercising influence and for one's own identity development.

The instruction follows the recommended teaching time specified by the Swedish National Agency for Education for state grants: 2 × 37 hours.
To receive a diploma, students must complete the course's study components according to the checklist. For distance learning, this includes, for example, attendance at a minimum of 25 lessons as well as completion of reading assignments and submitted assignments.

Course Structure

The course follows a study plan with 30 lessons. The lessons are described in assignment schedules where all study components are specified with page and file references.

The instruction is planned by Maria Diemar, who is a secondary school teacher in Swedish as a second language. Throughout the academic year, Swedish traditions are woven into the instruction, such as Lucia, Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, and end-of-school celebrations.

All courses are designed according to SMUL Academy's pedagogical concept.

Learning Resources

The course is designed to provide students with practice in Swedish and Swedish culture, according to the Swedish National Agency for Education's curriculum for complementary Swedish, for students aged 13–15. The study material in Foundation Course H includes:

  • Swedish fiction and literary history, Google forms with excerpts from selected classic and modern texts, chronologically, from Icelandic sagas to Fredrik Backman with accompanying digital reading comprehension exercises.
  • Spegla Språket Grundbok 7, which is structured around different genres. In Foundation Course H, we will work with fairy tales, dystopias, poetry, opinion-based texts, and word classes (grammar). Each section concludes with a writing assignment based on the material and exercises we have worked on together during a period.
  • Spegla Språket Textsamling 7, which contains literary text excerpts and various types of non-fiction texts. The book is an excellent complement to the main textbook.
