Foundation Course A – Supplementary Swedish for children aged 6–7

The course provides students with a foundation in the Swedish language and Swedish culture in accordance with the Swedish National Agency for Education’s syllabus for supplementary Swedish.

During the course, students practise, among other things:

• the Swedish alphabet and the connection between sound and letter
• basic reading and reading comprehension
• simple writing and spelling
• listening, conversing, and retelling in Swedish
• words and concepts to express feelings, thoughts, and opinions
• Swedish traditions and holidays

Teaching follows the recommended teaching time specified by the Swedish National Agency for Education for government grants: 2 × 37 hours.

To receive a diploma, students must complete the course’s study components according to the checklist. For remote teaching, this means, for example, attending at least 25 lessons and completing the reading requirement and submitted assignments.

The course follows a study plan with 30 lessons. The lessons are described in assignment schedules where all study components are listed with page and file references.

The teaching is planned by Malin Possbeck-Reeves, a certified Swedish teacher for preschool class through Year 3. Throughout the school year, Swedish traditions are incorporated into the teaching, such as Lucia, Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, and the end-of-year celebration.

All courses are designed according to SMUL-akademin’s pedagogical concept.

The course uses printed teaching materials that are sent to the student’s address.

The teaching is based on the teaching materials series Jag läser by Martin Widmark:

• Huset på Alvägen – reading instruction and a story about Emma and Larry
• Huset på Alvägen – workbook with letter writing, phonemic analysis, and reading comprehension

Students also work with ZickZack 1 läs och skriv by Karin Fällman-Bajagic, Christina Hansson, and Susan Nieland, which develops reading and writing skills at word, sentence, and text level.
In addition, extra letter exercises created by the teacher are used.
