Beginner Swedish Course – Elementary School, ages 7-9

The beginner courses in Swedish for lower elementary school are aimed at children aged 7–9 and are intended for students abroad with at least one Swedish-speaking parent. The courses are specifically created for children who have never learned to speak or understand Swedish, but who can read and write in their school language.

The course can be completed in two ways:

  • distance learning in a group with a teacher (online)
  • private instruction in a small group (1–3 students)

The course focuses on helping students build vocabulary and gain an understanding of the language and its structure. The course is designed so that students recognize themselves and their Swedish cultural background.

Beginner courses Level 1 and 2 in Swedish for children aged 7-9 are two courses for children who can read and write in their school language(s) and who have a Swedish or Finland-Swedish connection through a parent or another close family member. It requires no prior knowledge, but the child must be able to speak and understand English, French, or Spanish.

We have two course levels:

  • Step 1, beginner Swedish for lower elementary, intended for students who are completely new to the SMUL Academy and who do not speak Swedish with anyone in the family.
  • Step 2, beginner Swedish for lower elementary, intended for students who have already studied for one year at the SMUL Academy or have equivalent knowledge.

If there is a Swedish-speaking family member, we strongly encourage them to try to speak more Swedish with the student while they are studying at the SMUL Academy. . This strengthens the learning of Swedish.
The course corresponds to language level A1/A2, according to the European definition (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) by the Council of Europe).

Course structure and level

The course follows a study plan with 30 lessons. The lessons are described in assignment schedules where all study components are specified with page and file references.

Students studying Swedish as beginners often already know a lot about Sweden, regularly celebrate Swedish traditions, and may even have Swedish intonation when they speak because they have heard Swedish regularly since they were young. The goal of our beginner courses is to enable them to connect with Sweden and Swedish relatives with a stronger and more natural Swedish as part of their identity.

The teacher reviews materials and assignments in a small group on Zoom. The student works on assignments between lessons with the support of the Swedish-speaking parent. Instruction is conducted with English as a support language (French and Spanish are also available upon request).

The instruction is planned by Maria Diemar, a teacher of Swedish as a second language. During the school year, Swedish traditions are woven into the teaching, such as Lucia, Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, and graduation.
All courses are designed according to the SMUL Academy's pedagogical concept.

Level 1 teaching materials

Both Step 1 and Step 2 use printed teaching materials sent to the student's address, as well as digital PDF materials.

Beginner Lower Elementary Step 1
The courses in beginner Swedish are built on the SMUL Academy's own teaching materials for Swedish children abroad and on materials for newly arrived students in Sweden who have Swedish as a second language, but otherwise follow the curriculum for supplementary Swedish.
Students work with the following:

  • Vår Svenska – an educational material developed by Maria Diemar
  • Språkis svenska för nyfikna A – printed workbook
  • Tio ord i veckan A – printed workbook
