Mittemellansvenska 12-16 years

The Intermediate Swedish course is aimed at young people aged 12–16 who speak and understand Swedish but have never studied Swedish. Intermediate Swedish aims to introduce students to studies in complementary Swedish. We approach the language through conversations, reading aloud, reading comprehension exercises, and writing assignments. We also read news articles and work with spelling exercises. The course is designed to prepare students for our regular basic courses in complementary Swedish. The course follows the Swedish National Agency for Education’s curriculum for complementary Swedish and is designed by a certified teacher.

The course can be completed in three ways:

  • distance learning with a parent as supervisor
  • online group distance learning with a teacher
  • private tutoring in a small group (1–3 students)

The teaching focuses on reading, simpler writing, language comprehension, and conversation. A reading assignment of approximately 60 minutes per week is included.

Academic objectives

Intermediate Swedish is aimed at young people aged 12–16 who speak and understand Swedish but have never studied it as a subject. They can speak and understand Swedish but have never used Swedish extensively for learning, especially not written Swedish. Intermediate Swedish is designed to introduce students to studies in complementary Swedish. We approach the language through conversations, reading aloud, reading comprehension exercises, news, and spelling exercises. All teaching and instructions are in Swedish.
The goal is to enable continued studies in complementary Swedish with peers.

During the course, students will practice, among other things:

  • Acquiring different types of texts. They practice listening and reading comprehension, both orally and in writing.
  • Students also practice reflecting on and comparing texts and content.
  • A recurring element throughout the course is working with spelling and spelling rules.

All courses at SMUL-akademin are designed according to the Swedish National Agency for Education's curriculum for complementary Swedish.
The teaching follows the recommended instruction time specified by the Swedish National Agency for Education for state grants: 2 × 37 hours.
To receive a diploma, students must complete the course's study components according to the checklist. For distance learning, this means, for example, attendance at a minimum of 25 lessons, as well as completed reading assignments and submissions.

Course Structure

The course follows a study plan with 30 lessons. The lessons are described in assignment schedules where all study components are listed with page and file references.
The teaching is planned by Maria Diemar, who is a teacher of Swedish as a second language. During the academic year, Swedish traditions are woven into the teaching, such as Lucia, Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, and school closing ceremonies.
All courses are designed according to SMUL-akademin's pedagogical concept.

Learning Resources

Students will use a mixture of digital and printed materials. All printed materials are sent to the student's home. Digital licenses are shared via the student's email.
The teaching is based on the following textbooks:

  • Liber svenska 6 (digital textbook)
  • Pejlo träning svenska 6 (printed textbook).
  • Liber Svenska för dig åk 7-9, the section on spelling, PDF

In addition, other current and engaging materials are used, such as Swedish Radio dramatizations for young people, and news in simplified Swedish. We also encourage students to listen and read in Swedish between lessons.
The language of instruction is Swedish. The teacher reviews materials and assignments in small classes on Zoom. Students work on assignments between lessons with a Swedish-speaking parent as support.
