Beginner Course in Swedish – Middle School, Ages 10–12

Beginner Swedish for middle school is aimed at students aged 10–13 and is intended for children abroad with at least one Swedish-speaking parent. The courses are designed for students who read and write in their school language but have never learned to speak or understand Swedish.

The course can be completed in two ways:

  • distance learning in a group with a teacher (online)
  • private instruction in a small group (1–3 students)

The instruction focuses on reading, simple writing, language comprehension, and conversation. A reading assignment of approximately 60 minutes per week is included. The course has three different course levels.

Course structure and level

The course follows a study plan with 30 lessons. The lessons are described in assignment schedules where all study components are specified with page and file references.

Students who study Swedish with the beginner courses often already know a great deal about Sweden, regularly celebrate Swedish traditions, and may even have Swedish intonation when they speak, as they have regularly heard Swedish since they were young. The goal of our beginner courses is for them to approach Sweden and Swedish relatives with a stronger and more natural Swedish identity.
The teacher reviews materials and assignments in a small group on Zoom. The student works on assignments between lessons with the Swedish-speaking parent as support. Instruction is conducted with English as a support language (upon request, also French or Spanish).

The instruction is planned by Maria Diemar, teacher of Swedish as a second language. Throughout the academic year, Swedish traditions are woven into the instruction, such as Lucia, Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, and end-of-school celebrations.

Students will build vocabulary, understanding of the language, and its structure. We work with the teaching material Fördel SVA grades 4–6 and SMUL Academy's own designed materials. The materials are selected and created to motivate students and to help them recognize themselves and their Swedish cultural background.

All courses are designed according to SMUL Academy's pedagogical concept.

Beginner Swedish for middle school is available in three different levels: levels 1–3. The courses are usually taken in order.

If you have questions about the structure, we recommend visiting the Frequently Asked Questions page.
