Foundation Course K – Supplementary Swedish for Upper Secondary Level, ages 17–20

Foundation Course K in supplementary Swedish is aimed at young people aged approximately 17–20 who have often already studied supplementary Swedish.
Foundation Course K is a direct continuation and deepening of Foundation Course J. The course follows the Swedish National Agency for Education’s syllabus for supplementary Swedish and is designed by a certified teacher.
The course can be completed in three ways:

distance learning with a parent as supervisor
remote instruction in a group with a teacher (online)
private tutoring in a small group (1–3 students)

The instruction focuses on reading, simpler writing, language comprehension, and conversation. A reading assignment of approximately 60 minutes per week is included.

Academic objectives

The course is designed to give students practice in the following aspects of Swedish and Swedish culture, in accordance with the Swedish National Agency for Education’s syllabus for supplementary Swedish.

Written production of texts in Swedish for communication, learning and reflection. Linguistic accuracy, and the linguistic and textual features that a Swedish text should have in order to function in its context.
Written production in Swedish of investigative and argumentative texts of various kinds. Swedish norms and stylistic features associated with these text types.
Reading and working with Swedish texts, including structuring, selecting, compiling, summarising and critically reviewing sources.
Oral presentation in Swedish with a focus on audience adaptation. Factors that make an oral presentation interesting and persuasive. Use of presentation technology aids to support oral delivery. Different ways of listening and providing feedback adapted to the communication situation.
Oral presentation in Swedish of an investigative and argumentative nature. Use of presentation technology aids as support in oral delivery.
Oral presentation in Swedish with advanced application of the rhetorical process.
Fiction from Sweden, from different periods and within the genres of prose, poetry and drama.
Structure, language, and style in Swedish non-fiction.
Swedish authorship and literary works from different times and eras. The relationship between literature and social development.
Argumentation techniques.
Basic Swedish-language concepts needed to discuss and analyse language and linguistic variation in a methodical and structured way, and to discuss issues of language correctness.
The structure, origin, and linguistic variation of the Swedish language.
Cultural topics related to Sweden.

The instruction follows the recommended teaching hours specified by the Swedish National Agency for Education for state grants: 2 × 37 hours.
To receive a diploma, students must complete the course’s study components according to the checklist. For distance learning, this means, for example, attendance at a minimum of 25 lessons, as well as completed reading assignments and submitted homework.

Course Structure

The course follows a study plan consisting of 30 lessons. The lessons are described in assignment schedules where all study modules are specified with page and file references.
The instruction is planned by Anna Samrud, who is a certified upper secondary teacher in Swedish and History. During the academic year, Swedish traditions are woven into the teaching, such as Lucia, Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, and the end-of-term ceremony.

The course is created to provide the student with training in Swedish and Swedish culture, according to the Swedish National Agency for Education’s syllabus for supplementary Swedish. The study materials for Foundation Course K include:

The teaching material Svenska 1, 2 och 3 – en komplett handbok covers the core content for Swedish 1, 2, and 3. The handbook contains a rich variety of different literary texts, non-fiction, and example texts with associated exercises and project proposals. The digital material includes, among other things, literary history, sociolinguistics, languages in the Nordic region, language history, and grammar. Additionally, the entire student book is included as a digital audiobook with a variety of self-correcting vocabulary and language exercises. Svenska 1, 2 och 3 – en komplett handbok covers the components of literature, speaking, writing, as well as language and linguistic correctness. Everything belonging to a specific component is grouped together, and the different courses are marked with three different colors: one color for Swedish 1, one for Swedish 2, and one for Swedish 3. Through the convenient all-in-one format, the progression of the subject is made clear while students can easily go back and review.

In addition to what is available in the teaching material, students will read a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction, as well as read and listen to classic Swedish speeches. In the teaching groups, students converse, reflect, analyze, and compare experiences based on current material. Students will also work with example and model texts. They will also work on vocabulary comprehension and interactive exercises in linguistic correctness.
